E-Courier

I was commissioned by a former Project Manager to help with the redesign for a transportation manifest page. They were in the middle of modernizing and wanted help making operations easier for their dispatch team. I was asked to create a better looking page while keeping most of the functionality the same. For me, this ment making the page cleaner and more open and hiding items behind menus until they were needed.

Midway through the project, the developers mentioned how they were unhappy that an outsider was making decisions for them and how they wanted more equity in innovations moving forward. While the foundation of design choices were their, moving forward the design process became more collaborative. The development team was happy to be listened to, I was happy with the improvements we were able to make for dispatchers, and project management was happy to have a product to sell.

Process

I started with wireframes to determine how to split the page successfully. Even though dispatchers typically used two monitors for splitting the page, I still wanted it to work with a single monitor for those who don't. I also looked at how to accomplish this using the design system the development team was using. The goal for me was to add minimization that freed up the page to allow dispatchers to scan the page easily. Simplifying the workflow to clicking on cards to display more information allowed for more space and a cleaner interface.

Once wireframes were approved, we moved to high fidelity. Here I incorporated the design system components and made minor twerks to add branding to the page. I couldn't go overboard because the system would be sold to companies where their branding colors would be implemented onto the page. Once the development team started implementing designs, the project became about tweaking it to incorporate quality of life items such as search, sort, and customization. This completed my time with the project, but I was able to leave the dev team with a great foundation that will allow them to build and implement new innovations for their customers. They were excited about the future of the program. I am happy to help them start on their journey and look forward to the amazing innovations they have in store!

Results

We expect an increase in usability, a decrease to time on task, and a decrease in time spent with dispatchers and drivers. These improvements would not only give the company a competitive advantage when dealing with third party truckers, but should increase revenue due to quicker processing.
